Nach der Ermordung des deutschen Botschaftsrates in Paris, von Rath, durch einen jungen polnischen Juden erfolgt vom 9, auf den 10. November 1938 die »Reichskristallnacht«, in deren Verlauf die Geschäfte und Wohnungen der Juden und Synagogen geplündert werden. In den darauffolgenden Tagen vollziehen Erlasse den vollständigen Ausschluß der Juden vom wirtschaftlichen Leben.
Man erlegt ihnen eine Strafe von einer Milliarde Mark auf, man zwingt sie, den gelben Stern zu tragen, man verbietet ihnen, Deutschland zu verlassen, man verhaftet sie und deportiert sie bald darauf. In der »Reichskristalinacht« liegt bereits der Keim von Nacht und Nebel.

Dès avril 1933, les SA organisent une campagne de boycott des magasins israélites et un décret interdit aux Juifs les emplois de fonctionnaires. Le 15 septembre 1935, les lois de Nuremberg enlèvent aux Juifs la citoyenneté allemande, interdisent les mariages ou les relations extraconjugales entre Juifs et Aryens. Au cours des années suivantes, les Juifs sont exclus des professions libérales. Après l'assassinat du conseiller d'ambassade allemand à Paris, von Rath, par un jeune Juif polonais, a lieu dans tout le Reich la « Reichskristallnacht », du 9 au 10 novembre 1938, au cours de laquelle les magasins et les appartements des Juifs, les synagogues sont pillés. Dans les jours qui suivent des décrets achèvent d'éliminer complètement les Juifs de la vie économique. On leur inflige une amende d'un milliard de marks, on leur impose le port de l'étoile jaune, on leur interdit de quitter l'Allemagne, on les arrête et déporte bientôt. Il y a en germe Nuit et Brouillard dans la « Reichskristallnacht ». C'est déjà la sélection selon la forme du nez ou des oreilles, la couleur des yeux ou des cheveux, avec de pseudo-références scientifiques qui poussent la perversité à son paroxysme.

As early as April 1933, the SA organises a boycott of all Jewish businesses and a decree forbids the employment of Jewish people as functionaries. September 15, 1935: The Nuremberg Laws withdraw the German nationality from Jewish people, forbid marriage and extra martial relationships between Jewish people and Aryans. In the course of the next few years Jewish people are excluded from professional occupations. The assassination of the German diplomatic counsellor in Paris, von Rath, by a young, polish Jew leads to "Reichskristallnacht", in the night of November 9th to 10th, 1938, during which the businesses and residences of Jewish people and the synagogues are plundered. Decrees enforce the complete exclusion of Jewish people from economic life in the days which follow. A fine to the amount of one billion Marks is imposed upon them, they are forced to wear yellow stars, they are forbidden to leave Germany, they are arrested and deported soon after. The nucleus of Nacht und Nebel lies in "Reichskristallnacht". Thereafter, the sorting according to the shape of the nose or the ears, the colour of the eyes or hair begins, all coupled with pseudo-scientific arguments which exemplify the perversity of it all.

Es beginnt die Selektion nach der Form der Nase oder der Ohren, der Farbe der Augen oder der Haare, mit pseudowissenschaftlichen Begründungen, die die Perversität auf die Spitze treiben.
Gottfried Helnweins Absicht war es, mahnend an die Ausnahmegesetze und die abartigen arischen Eugenik-Theorien zu erinnern, Die Serie von Kinderporträts stigmatisiert die Rassenideologie, und von ihr geht eine außergewöhnliche Kraft aus. Es ist im übrigen diese Ausstrahlung, die einen ewig Gestrigen zu Schnitten mit dem Rasiermesser veranlaßt hat, als die monumentalen Bilder in Köln zwischen dem Dom und dem Museum Ludwig ausgestellt wurden.

It was Gottfried Helnwein's intention to remind us admonishingly of exceptional laws and the abhorrent Aryan theory of Eugenics. The series of childrens' portraits stigmatises racial ideology and it exudes an extraordinary force. Moreover, it is this radial energy which provoked the knife attack by a nostalgic, as the monumental pictures were being exhibited between the cathedral and Museum Ludwig in Cologne.

Gottfried Helnwein a voulu rappeler le souvenir des lois d'exception et des aberrantes théories de l'eugénisme aryen. Sa série de portraits d'enfants stigmatise l'idéologie raciale et une force extraordinaire en émane. C'est d'ailleurs ce rayonnement qui a provoqué les coups de rasoir d'un nostalgique, quand les images monumentales furent exposées à Cologne, entre la cathédrale et le Musée Ludwig.

I admire the work of Gottfried Helnwein a great deal. This photographic testimony encourages reflection and provokes the examination of conscience, which is necessary for every one of us where racism is concerned. The laceration of the portraits is proof of the fact that we cannot be indifferent to the warning of the "final solution". I consider myself lucky to be able to exhibit this gallery of memories in its present form in Lausanne. There are also a number of photographers from the East to be found there, in the name of the new emerging Europe, now that totalitarianism is being forced back. The childrens' faces are to remind us that innumerable victims were needed during the past sixty years to get out of "the Night and the Fog."

Ich hege tiefe Bewunderung für die Arbeit Gottfried Helnweins. Dieses photogrophische Zeugnis regt zum Nachdenken an
und verlangt die Prüfung des Gewissens - die in der Frage des Rassismus bei jedem von uns nötig ist. Das Zerfetzen der Portraits beweist, daß wir der Mahnung der »Endlösung« nicht gleichgültig gegenüberstehen dürfen. Ich schätze mich glücklich, daß ich diese Galerie der Erinnerung in ihrer derzeitigen Form in Lausanne ausstellen kann. Wir finden dort übrigens auch zahlreiche Fotos aus dem Osten, im Namen des im Entstehen begriffenen
neuen Europas, nun, da der Totalitarismus zurückgedrängt wird. Die Kindergesichter sollen daran gemahnen, daß unzälige Opfer in den vergangenen sechzig Jahren gefordert wurden, um aus Nacht und Nebel herauszugelangen.

J'admire beaucoup le travail de Gottfried Helnwein. Ce témoignage photographique impose la réflexion et provoque l'examen de conscience qui, en matière de racisme, est nécessaire chez chacun de nous. La lacération des toiles est la preuve qu'on ne peut demeurer indifférent devant le rappel de la « solution finale ». Je me félicite de pouvoir montrer cette galerie de la mémoire, dans son état actuel, à Lausanne. Nous y accueillons d'ailleurs de nombreux photographes de l'Est au nom de la nouvelle Europe en train de s'élaborer, maintenant que c'en est fait du totalitarisme. Les visages d'enfants sont là pour rappeler qu'il a fallu d'innombrables victimes, durant les soixante dernières années, pour sortir de la Nuit et du Brouillard.
