Zielsetzung: Der im Unterricht der Qualifikationsphase vertieft zu behandelnde thematische Schwerpunkt 1 "Bilder vom Menschen" gibt u.a. die Auseinandersetzung mit "Bildern der Entfremdung" und die Inszenierung der menschlichen Figur vor. Bezüge zu dem thematischen Schwerpunkt 2 sind insbesondere durch die für Helnwein charakteristische Einbindung der menschlichen Figur in Raumzusammenhänge gegeben. Eine Annäherung an das Werk Helnweins soll in kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit dem sich in den Arbeiten manifestierenden Menschenbild erfolgen.

Noted Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein, obsessed with the fact that his society could ignore the deaths of six million victims, dedicates his art to Holocaust remembrance. When the 50th anniversary of Kristallnacht passes without commemoration, he creates an heroic art installation. Co-stars Maximiliam Schell, Sean Penn, Jason Lee. ...

"Ninth November Night," the Holocaust remembrance documentary which debuted in Malibu last August in its New Malilbu Theatre engagement to qualify for Academy Award consideration, will be a featured entry in the AFI Film Festival Saturday (Nov. 13) and Sunday (Nov. 14.)
Produced by Malibu artist and curator Gisela Guttman with director/composer Henning Lohner, the film concerns Austrian painter Gottfried Helnwein's lifelong dedication to artworks perpetuating awareness of Holocaust attrocities.
The documentary recently was a prize-winner at the Ojai Film Festival and is invited to the Nagoya Film Festival to be held next June as part of the World Expo in Japan as well as to the Calgary (Canada) Festival which honors films of humanitarian outreach. ...

The film tells the story of famed Austrian painter Gottfried Helnwein, obsessed with a mission to use his art to preserve the memory of Holocaust persecutions. ...

..A clarity of vision in his subject matter was emerging in Helnwein's art that was to stay consistent throughout his career. His subject matter is the human condition. The metaphor for his art, although it included self-portraits, is dominated by the image of the child, but not the carefree innocent child of popular imagination. Helnwein instead created the profoundly disturbing yet compellingly provocative image of the wounded child. The child scarred physically and the child scarred emotionally from within.
